🧊 The Ice-Point Method: Simple, Reliable Thermometer Calibration

Accurate temperature readings start with a properly calibrated thermometer - and the Ice-Point Method is one of the most trusted ways to ensure precision. This quick technique uses the freezing point of water (0°C / 32°F) as a stable reference, making it ideal for verifying digital and analogue thermometers alike.

🔍 How It Works

  1. Prepare the Ice Bath Fill a container with pea-sized crushed ice and add a small amount of clean water to form a solid slush.

  2. Insert the Probe Place the thermometer probe into the centre of the ice bath, ensuring it doesn’t touch the sides or bottom.

  3. Allow to Stabilise Wait 30–60 seconds for the reading to settle.

  4. Check the Reading A correctly calibrated thermometer should display 0°C (32°F).
